Monday 23rd BBC Programme
On Monday January 23rd, 2012, at 7.30pm, as part of its 'Inside Out' series on BBC One, BBC South East is broadcasting a programme on the Kitchener Camp. This camp was located on the edge of Sandwich just beyond the swing bridge. The programme is about how the Kitchener Camp, which was originally a First World War camp, became, in 1939, a refugee camp for about 4000 Jewish men who were fleeing from Nazi oppression in Greater Germany. Many of these men had recently been incarcerated in Gestapo run concentration camps. The programme producers have interviewed a Sandwich resident who remembers the camp, some of the men who are still alive, some of their descendants, and Clare Ungerson, a resident of Sandwich, who has been researching the Kitchener Camp for some years.
