Sandwich Goes French for Le Weekend

Le Weekend 2016 is on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June

Le Tour de Sandwich will be on Sunday 12th

The web pages will be updated as the programme is agreed, but in the meantime the 2015 pages have been left in place to give you a good idea what Le Weekend has to offer.

New for 2016:  A Can Can Street dancing competition and an evening with the P&O Ferries Workplace Choir on Saturday 11th in St Mary's Arts Centre. The choir won the BBC challenge in 2013 and became the UK's 'Best Workplace Choir'.   P&O have sponsored Le Weekend each year, we are delighted that the choir will join us in 2016.

Can Can Street Dancing competition.  Sunday 12th June 2016.

We just love the various can can dancers that have entertained us in recent years.  So much so that we are inviting them all back for a dance off!  Each team will dance the famous can can and also one contemporary dance.  There is a cash prize for the winning team and the runners up.  Click here for photos of previous years dancing.

The street concert will be as good as last year:  Sur Les Docks are back by popular demand!

Le Weekend 2015 was the sixth year, this most popular event took over Sandwich Town centre for two days of French themed Fun and Festivities.

Born on the docks of Dunkirk by firelight, this seven-piece assault to harbours, pubs and taverns is a melting pot of reggae punk, irish shanties, french ballads, celtic rock.

Regularly touring Brittany, Germany and England this band are no stranger to the folk-pub-festival scene.

Sur Les Docks is ready to spend a good time with you and enjoy the craic, sharing their sense of the fete ( and to communicate with the audience with no frontier…)

This young man is a sensation - and completely self taught!

Les Sonneurs de la côte

Performing primarily with bagpipes from central France, the band "Les Sonneurs De La Côte" is strongly influenced by traditional music. Enriched by the sounds of an accordion, a guitar, a violin, a clarinet and percussion, the band interprets traditional pieces, contemporary melodies and some compositions written by members of the band which all have a common point; music to dance to (waltz, bourrées, mazurkas, branles, scottisches...). The musicians are connected to their home port Calais and to its renowned music conservatory where they all come from.

The P&O Ferries Workplace Choir

The P&O Ferries workplace choir have been performing together now for just over two years after being selected and formed as part of BBC TV’s ‘The Choir: Sing While You Work’ Series 2 in 2013. The choir eventually triumphed over its rival companies after performing an original piece of music by Royal composer Paul Mealor and took home the title ‘Best Workplace Choir’.

In 2014 the choir went on to perform on even more impressive stages, including joining Susan Boyle for her first UK tour at London’s Eventim Apollo, headlining at Leeds Castle Classical Open Air Concert and singing to 50,000 plus at London’s Hyde Park for The Last Night of the Proms alongside Earth Wind & Fire, Terry Wogan, Rufus Wainwright and many other well know names in music and entertainment. They concluded 2014 by hosting their debut concert at the beautiful and historic Dover Castle and singing at The Mission to Seafarers Christmas carol concert in central London with HRH Princess Anne in attendance.

The choir has already performed at a variety of important events in 2015 beginning the year with a live performance at ‘The France Show’ held in London’s Olympia, Earls Court and also performing during a beautiful weekend in July where they joined Channel 4’s Gogglebox stars Steph & Dom Parker at their humble abode ‘The Salutation’ in Sandwich, Kent, for a Charity Summer Prom.

Most recently the choir recorded their first album at St. James’ church, Paddington which will be available to buy before Christmas. Music includes classical pieces by Mozart and Bruckner as well as gospel, pop and Irish folk.
